Channel demersal NQS FMP explained: goals, benefits and updates

Presentation slide titled 'Channel Demersal NQS FMP' with text highlighting goals and updates, featuring a flowchart on planning processes on a blue background.

In response to requests from the inshore fishing industry, raised through the Regional Fisheries Groups (RFGs), the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has developed a set of infographics and short videos to help explain the goals and progress of the first five Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs), published in December 2023.

Spotlight on the Channel demersal non-quota species FMP

The Channel demersal non-quota species FMP, often referred to as the Channel demersal NQS FMP, is one of the first five plans and aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of demersal non-quota stocks in the Channel and the fishers who depend on them.

There are 19 species covered in this FMP including gurnards, pouting, brill, john dory, lemon sole, red mullet, turbot, smoothhound, lesser spotted dogfish, cuttlefish, squid and octopus.

What’s happening now?

We’re committed to transparency and keeping our stakeholders informed as the FMPs are implemented. To support this, we have created an infographic which outlines current actions, achievements, and next steps.

It will be updated regularly and shared across:

  • this blog
  • FMP working groups
  • the RFG mailing list
  • MMO’s social media channels

Goals of the Channel NQS FMP

We have also created an infographic and video to show the FMP goals and why they will help.

Learn about the goals of the FMP and why they were chosen:

Infographic titled "Channel Demersal Non-Quota Species FMP in English Waters" outlines planned strategies and timelines ranging from short-term (1 to 2 years) to long-term (3 to 5 years) for managing non-quota fish species. The infographic includes goals such as introducing new reporting requirements, developing scientific assessments, establishing a management framework, and introducing preliminary fishery and ecosystem models, featuring icons and a three-column layout for short, medium, and long-term goals. Additional details and resources are provided for further information.
